The Difference Between a Good Song and a GREAT Song

Nate FancherSongwriting

Too often we artsy-fartsies neglect thinking through how our listeners will feel when hearing our songs.

It’s obviously not easy, but writing a song while being in the shoes of your listener is incredibly important.

You might have seen this, but a while back Alanis Morissette went on the late late show with James Corden, and they did a complete re-write of her smash hit “Ironic”.

If you remember the song then you’ll love this….

The crowd loved it.

Now don’t get me wrong, her original song was good, and this new version is of course somewhat of a parody, but it made me think of an important reality when it comes to GREAT songwriting that inspires others….

….You HAVE to make connecting with your listener your priority.

There are really only two things a song needs in order to do this. Their new version of the song nailed it.

These two principles make the difference between a good song and a GREAT song….

Here they are:

  1. Make every last word in your lyrics count.
  2. Be entertaining.

Yeah that’s pretty much it. At least in my strong opinion. 🙂

But what do you think?
